How to Choose the Right Bed for You?

Design Space

Picking the right furniture piece for your home or apartment can be difficult as there are often many variables involved, some that you might have never even considered! If you’re looking for a place to start, explore Inhabitr’s selection of bed furniture curated by designers for you!

We first gave you the best tips on how to choose the right sofa for your home. Now follow along as we show you how to pick the right bed.

Before anything else, let’s start off by addressing a common misconception, which is that many people seem to confuse beds with mattresses. The simplest way to distinguish between the two is that the mattress is what you actually sleep on, a ‘bed’ is usually short for ‘bed frame’; it’s what supports you and your mattress!

  1. Size

Choosing the size for your bed frame depends on a few factors: how big your room is, and how much of a presence you’d like your bed to have. There are four main options for sizes you can choose a bed from.

  1. Twin Size Bed: 75” H x 38” W (19.8 Sq Ft)
  2. Full Size Bed: 75” H x 53” W (27.6 Sq Ft)
  3. Queen Size Bed: 80” H x 60” W (33.3 Sq Ft)
  4. King Size Bed: 80” H x 76” W (42.2 Sq Ft)

As a general rule of thumb, you want your frame to take up around 30% of your room’s square footage. Don’t know what that means or how to do it? No problem!

All you have to do is measure the length and width of your room in feet, then multiply them together to get the square footage. From there, you can take the approximate square footage provided above, and divide it by the total square footage of your room to get the percentage.

You want around 30%, because your bed acts as a centerpiece for the rest of your room. You still want enough space for nightstands, dressers, other furniture pieces and some empty space to really make your furniture pop.

It’s worth mentioning that if you’re 6’2 or taller all this goes out the window, just get a bed where your legs don’t dangle off the edge.

  1. Style

Like the different sizing options, your beds can also come in different styles. Some of the more popular options include platform beds and upholstered beds.

Platform Bed:

These tend to run lower to the ground, giving you a sturdy and sleek place to rest each night. Some benefits of a platform bed are that they tend to be cheaper (since they don’t use box springs), have great support, and have a wide variety of options to choose from since it’s one of the most popular styles.

Platform beds are also often recommended for people who suffer from back pain because of the excellent support it provides for your mattress. Lower quality frames will cause your mattress to sink, creating an uneven surface for your back and potential issues down the line.

Upholstered Bed:

An upholstered bed is a fancy way of saying that the materials the frame is made of is something other than wood.

These are the penultimate for both style and comfort, you won’t have to worry about getting a bad night’s rest on your brand new upholstered bed. Don’t get too excited though, because getting an upholstered bed means a lot of regular maintenance to keep it clean and free of any dust.

This is usually because the different materials it’s made of (velvet, faux leather, suede, etc.) are prone to catching dust and other particles.

If you’re willing to put in the extra effort for the sake of your coziness then by all means, get an upholstered bed! It’s hard to beat the comfort that one can provide.

  1. Durability

This point, while important, is also the one that varies the most from person to person. If you’re looking for a bed to last you a lifetime, make sure you’re investing an appropriate amount of money to match. If you want a shorter term solution, then you might even be able to get by with an air mattress or other temporary solutions.

For a bed that is both high-quality and shorter term, you should consider renting. If you’re living in a temporary abode, you can pick a higher quality bed frame that’s easily replaceable by just renting for a few months.
